Looking for a creative, hands-on activity that connects your kids to nature? Try building a wooden watermill powered by the gentle current of a creek. It's a playful, imaginative project to enjoy alone or with family—and the perfect excuse to bring out your favorite Opinel tools!
What you'll need:
How to make it:
Find a small pine trunk with side branches that form a star shape. Saw off a section about 6-8 inches long. These branches will form the hub of your watermill.

Using the No.07 My First Opinel or Outdoor Junior folding knife, let the kids gently peel the bark from the trunk and its branches. It’s a fun, hands-on task that prepares the surface for attaching the blades.

Cut 4 to 6 evenly sized pieces from thick pine bark—these will be your watermill’s blades. Try to keep them as uniform as possible for balance.

Glue each bark blade between the trunk’s star-shaped branches. Use clothespins to hold them in place while the glue sets. Drying time may vary depending on humidity.

Once the glue is dry, remove the pins. Place two Y-shaped branches in the creek about 4 inches apart, or use sturdy rocks if you prefer. Rest your watermill on these natural supports so it can spin freely in the current.
