With the No.08 Artist Limited Edition V Cosmos - a thematic limited edition collection released biannually - Opinel has collaborated with three artists whose work is a tribute to this universal fascination, to the silent connection between us and the stars.
The cosmos inspires scientists as much as artists, dreamers as much as explorers. It embodies the connection between humanity and the universe, between the tangible and the elusive. In the immensity of the sky, everyone searches for meaning, emotion, and light. On the No.08 hornbeam handles, three artists have translated that same quest into vivid interpretations of the cosmos.

For over 130 years Opinel has been crafting knives and tools in the heart of the French Alps. Much like Joseph Opinel did from his workshop in 1890, today we still manufacture Opinel products from our factory in Chambery, France.

"My illustration pays tribute to the Tiger constellation (Tigris in latin, named after the Tiger river) and the Mermaid constellation (near from Ceneus). The tiger, powerful and majestic, surrenders with grace in front of the mermaid, whose head radiates like the sun. The sun represents the sovereign star, the one which gives life and light everything around it. Majestic and inevitable, it looks after the universe, like the mermaid looks after the moon that she accompanies with a delicate gesture. Around them, the stars shape a protective constellation, like a celestial sanctuary where this encounter between terrestrial power and cosmic energy happens."
Benjamin Jeanjean is a French visual artist based in the Basque Country.
"This illustration, such as the cosmos, organized and structured, is a symbolic exploration. In the center, an antique vase which could be seen as the receptacle of the universe. The solar face in the middle, ornamented with the Yin and the Yang, symbolises the universal balance. The phases of the moon, arranged in a circle, remind of the eternal cycle of time. The surrounding geometric designs, braided and intertwined, suggest the idea of a cosmic web where each element is linked to a broader all. This illustration plays on duality: from afar, it’s a classic etching evocating of the ancient times; from close, contemporary symbols arise, mixing tradition and modernity."
Elisa, also known as Asile, is a freelance artist and illustrator based in France.
"For this illustration, I wanted to talk about balance: between day and night, Sun and Moon. No duel here, but a duo. Two characters, sat on a moon crescent, looking at each other. Their clothes, between stellar and solar designs, speak their bond: different but equal. Around them, three birds carry stars as if they were re-drawing a constellation. The moon becomes a space of encounter and tenderness, a sanctuary suspended between dream and reality."
